Custom vs. Manufactured Range Hoods

custom range hoods vs manufactured range hoods

There are so many decisions to make when designing your kitchen. From flooring and countertops to the placement of light switches and outlets, the big and little details are what makes a kitchen perfect for you and your family.

That’s why we like to break down some of the choices you’ll face, explain the pros and cons, and talk through the reasons a particular choice may or may not be right for you. Today, we’re talking about range hoods.

Why do I need a range hood?

Practically, a hood acts almost like an air filter, removing smells that are released into the air as you cook. It can also provide extra lighting right above your cooktop, and get rid of any smoke that might rise as you cook (and help you avoid accidentally setting off the smoke detector).

Aesthetically, hoods can make a statement. They can be sleek and barely noticeable, or they can be ornate and the centerpiece of your kitchen. They can be purchased off-the-shelf or custom crafted just for your kitchen. So how can you be sure which is the best option for you?

The pros and cons of manufactured vs. custom range hoods

Manufactured range hoods are:

  • Cost effective

  • Usually in stock

  • Straight-forward -- you know exactly what you’re going to get; you can see it and touch it before you purchase it

The downside? There aren’t many options, and there is no way to customize them to fit the exact size or style you desire.

Custom range hoods are:

  • Entirely customizable -- you design it, and you can choose the size, shape, and finishes

  • Unique

  • A statement piece for your kitchen

The downside of getting exactly what you want? It will take longer to arrive, since it has to be custom made, and it is more of a financial investment than a standard hood. Also, you won’t be able to see what it looks like in person, so there is some risk in not knowing exactly what you will get.

What style fits you best?

If you’re still unsure which option is the best fit for you, read the following two statements. Which do you identify with the most?:

OR

If the first statement feels more like you, then a manufactured hood is most likely the best option. If the second statement felt truer, you might want to explore creating a custom hood.

There aren’t any strict design rules around this -- let these insights serve as a guideline, and then choose what is right for you and your soon-to-be gorgeous kitchen.

I like how you mentioned that a range hood is like a statement piece for your kitchen and that if you choose a custom designed one that it will be unique and you can choose what will fit best for your kitchen. I'm trying to update my kitchen and I really like the idea of a new range hood. I'll have to look around and find someone who can help me custom design one.
Great!!! For me the second statement works best. I am looking forward to making my kitchen the best in the world and again I have budget in my mind and I'd go for the customized range hood. Thanks for sharing am off to tweet this?
